I was spending too much time on social media as a way to escape work. It was becoming a habit to go to Twitter when things got hard. I added friction by logging out of my social media accounts whenever I finished. Logging in is the friction that keeps me away most of the time.
I was spending too much time on my phone in the morning. Putting it across the room forces me to get up. I put my kindle next to my bed in case I want to stay in bed longer so I can slowly wake up to a good book instead of the news.
I wasn't working out regularly because my brain was getting hung up on the effort and time required. To reduce this friction, I wrote down why working out is good for me, I planned short, simple workouts that wouldn't take too much time but show progress towards my goals.
I wasn't feeling motivated working on my side projects in climate change. Since a side project with an ambiguous outcome is daunting, I set-up a concrete goal with a check-in 1.5months away. I also found a mentor whose work I respect and who is helping me craft my larger vision
Change is hard, especially in the moments when you're not thinking clearly -- waking up, in the middle of work, etc -- so reflect in your quiet times and determine how you can setup your environment to help you live in alignment with your priorities.
P.S. I am no expert at changing my environment, so I would love to hear: how have you changed your environment to support your priorities?
