So on Friday I bought a @nba_topshot Series 1 Lebron James legendary 1/59 for $71,455. I figured I would explain why I did it and why I think I got a steal of a deal. https://twitter.com/nba_topshot/status/1352694177943834625
A little background, TopShot is a digital NBA collectibles application built on @flow_blockchain and powered by NonFungible Tokens (NFTs). It has been in beta since late last summer and I joined in September.
I am a massive NBA and crypto head so fortunately for me I was immediately sold and couldn't get enough moments. My first order of business was buying an entire HOLO (1/50 moments) set. This was almost entirely because I knew there was a challenge to earn a LeBron moment.
There was a time where myself and a few others would consist of 50%+ of the daily marketplace volume. Shout out @veerman @Kyloren_NFT @HiJDFenz @pranksyNFT @Wades_ETH @Ars0nic and many others. Now the site is doing over $2m a day and struggling for uptime due to the demand.
I am very lucky that I was in the right place at the right time to ride the explosion of popularity. The thing is, I don't think it is even close to being done.
The fact of the matter is @nba_topshot is a killer app. I have been evangelizing blockchain to my friends for YEARS. A few have bought some tokens on Coinbase here and there but no more than that. TopShot is the first time for me where it feels different.
I show it to my friends and I don't even need to explain why this is cool. They get it. I am sure they are not the only ones. @rohamg @Alanfalcon and crew have absolutely crushed the user onboarding experience in a way no crypto company has done before.
They are also actively working on building apps and games on top of the moments you can hold on TopShot and since it is all on an open ledger anyone can. @swyysh is actively building a fantasy basketball app which is awesome.
I see TopShot at this weird but amazing intersection between trading cards, daily fantasy and a player stock market. Apps like @starstockmarket are trying to do this as well, but TopShot being fully digital is well equipped to outpace them.
So on to why I bought THAT moment. I own a lot of moments (4000+). My main focus has always been on stars. I have some fun bets on players I like like Jaren Jackson Jr but those are small in comparison to my Luka, Steph, Lebron and Giannis moments.
Moments of great players are special. It is not a bet on their future it is just a bet on TopShot and I have already made the case as to why I am bullish on TopShot. Even better is moments of great players during incredibly special moments. There are only a few on TopShot.
In my opinion, the big three of these moments from series 1 are:
1. Lebron James Kobe tribute dunk
2. Luka Doncic game winning 3 point shot
3. Vince Carter's final shot in the NBA

These moments hold special value because they are special points in NBA history.
I cried when Kobe Bryant died. I can't explain why but he felt bigger than life and his death really caught me off guard. I know I am not alone here. The emotion and history of this moment cannot be recreated easily. This is why it is TopShot's most iconic moment.
Here is a side by side of the dunks https://twitter.com/Lakers/status/1225939385515823104
So I saw the chance to buy the first ever minted moment of the more rare version of a play that is very special to me on a site that I am extremely bullish on and I jumped on it. You would have to pry this moment from my dead body if you wanted it any time soon.
This was a long winded way of saying, do I think I will make money on this moment? Yes. But do I think I will ever sell it? Honestly, probably not.
