1/ Last Spring, I was afraid. We nominated 1 person in our household to brave the COVID jungle to obtain the bare essentials. We cancelled physicals and dentist appointments. We wiped down our groceries with Lysol wipes before bringing them into the house and threw away the bags.
2/ I consumed as much information as I could get my hands on. I tried to sort through the sometimes questionable information with reason and logic. Regardless of how many times the recommendations changed, one thing remained clear - children were largely sparred from COVID.
3/ So, we started to loosen up a bit. We let our children ride bikes with friends. We enjoyed walks with small groups. More data became available over the summer months and it still pointed to children being sparred. We all breathed a sigh of relief thinking that our children...
4/ would be able to get some pieces of their lives back. The data continued to show that those of us under the age of 65 and in relatively good health had a greater chance of dying in an auto accident. We again, felt relieved and a sense of duty to protect the vulnerable.
5/ We were hopeful that, with some adjustments, we could all regain a sense of normalcy while protecting each other. How naive we were to underestimate the role of politics, greed, and teachers’ unions.
