ROTD3 is a compilation album from J. Cole's label, Dreamville. The original album featured 18 tracks in 2019 while we then got a 30 track deluxe in early 2020.
This album featured the help of over over 30 artists and over 20 producers. The album also came with a 30 minute documentary which had some of the most fun content to watch!
ROTD3 starts us off with Under the Sun, one of the hardest tracks on here. Everyone had great verses on here but the majority seems to think DaBaby carried it - what do you think? The sampling & having Kendrick on the hook was perfect!
The second track we got was Down Bad, one of the most fun songs on here & an incredible beat to compliment the artists. Just let the video speak for itself. This track was actually 1 of the 2 singles that were initially released to promote the album.
Here's a short clip of the making of Down Bad while in the studio.
J Cole's reaction to the lyrics on LamboTruck will never get old for me lmao. I love seeing behind the scenes stuff like this. Also LamboTruck went HARD.
A few tracks into the project and we get Wells Fargo. I always laugh at them doing English accents & then we get a combined hook. The energy in that studio would have been unmatched.
The crazy thing about this project was that in the span of 10 days of recording, they had invited over 100 artists to join the process. This was literally the ultimate collaboration project! Although they only used around 30 artists and 20 producers.
Another single that they released before dropping the project was Costa Rica. This track had 9 artists on it while it was just under 4 minutes long, track also went hard too.
Literally right after Costa Rica, they brought us 1993, one of the most fun tracks on here featuring a cypher like beat where everyone has a short verse while Buddy just tryna smoke!
At the halfway mark I like how J. Cole slid Middle Child in there, the song did NUMBERS & regardless of how much I've heard it, I still love the track.
The final track on the original album is Sacrifices. This is my personal favorite track on here, with Johnny Venus' incredible singing, two amazing verses by Smino & Saba, and J. Cole for the finale.
There were so many artists that were going to be on here but for whatever reason they just never made it on. Big K.R.I.T was an artist who was supposed to have a feature on it.
Now on the deluxe we got some great additions like Big Black Truck. The dark & eerie beat makes the song tbh, but I love how JID comes in on it too.
Now as I come near the end of my thread, I want to highlight the final track on the deluxe, Still Dreamin. My favorite off the deluxe, JID, Lute, & 6LACK come onto a beautiful instrumental & have a mesmerizing chorus.
Dreamville is still dreamin'.
Dreamville is still dreamin'.
I hope yall enjoyed this thread on one of the most fun projects I've listened to! Regardless of what you think about Dreamville, you can't deny they have serious energy when compiling tracks & projects. I can't wait for ROTD4!
