I’m married to an enlisted soldier. There have been many times the money ran out before the month did. I know well the thrill of triple coupon days. I can fix anything in our house (seriously) because he was always gone and we couldn’t afford to hire someone. And I have a Rolex.
It was a college graduation present. During the lean years, it was also an insurance policy. I knew that I could always sell it if I had to. Sometimes I would put it on, walk into a store where I couldn’t afford anything, & watch the clerks treat me nicer after seeing it.
What does it mean that Biden wears one? It means he’ll be on time. Probably. It’s a watch — a well-crafted timepiece that doesn’t have to be wound. It means at some point he was finally earning enough to buy himself something nice.
Or maybe someone who cared about him gave it to him as a gift. Maybe he’s had times when he saw it on his wrist & couldn’t believe he made it so far, & maybe that pulled him through some self doubt.
I’ve worn my Rolex when I was trying to cook dinner with only what was left in our empty pantry. I’ve worn it while opening envelopes for bills we couldn’t pay. I’ve worn it scanning websites for preschools we couldn’t afford.
I’ve taken it off and set it next to my keyboard so I could type faster and get more freelance work done, & I’ve worn it while sending out invoices. It’s a watch. A really nice watch. It’s not a gold toilet.
