I am on track to referee ~100 manuscripts this year across a few different journals. Quick thread (in no particular order) listing my top five most common issues with manuscripts that you can avoid when submitting! (1) The paper is actually 3 different papers. Pick one! 1/3
(2) No explanation of why the topic is important or matters, what the consequences of the author's perspective/innovation are... esp. common for grad students (3) Long introduction so doesn't tell you what the paper will be about until page >3, extraneous material generally 2/3
(4) Doesn't take the time to proofread, leaves things in like "look this citation up later"... have a friend read it! (5) Doesn't check submission requirements of the journal, for ex. leaving name on the document, wrong citation format, inappropriate content for the journal 3/3
