Went fishing last year with my son at Falcon Lake in South Texas and saw so much of the land that will hopefully be saved from #BorderWall destruction thanks to the decision of @JoeBiden to pause construction and reconsider building any more walls. A thread. 1/X
Started in Laredo and drove south on US Hwy 83. Most of that route would be walled under Trump's plan. The wall would destroy this little park in El Cenizo, the only park/playground the community has. The Rio Grande is just to the right of the photo. 2/X
I was city manager for El Cenzio in 1998 while studying at the @TheLBJSchool. The city was just getting started then and I set up tax collections and city elections. Great to see a new park and city hall. Still many challenges but basic municipal services are being provided. 3/X
Stopped at an overlook just off the highway in Zapata County. This is the land that they want to wall off. Beautiful South Texas brushland teeming with wildlife. Bears have been spotted around here. 4/X
Border Patrol was parked on the overlook. Clear view of Mexico and the Rio Grande for miles. Easy to spot someone crossing the river. Reality is that the border in this area is very closely watched and heavily patrolled. No need for a wall. The river is an excellent barrier. 5/X
San Ygnacio, Texas is a historical and cultural treasure. Founded in 1830, it is very well preserved and one of the last remaining examples of a South Texas ranching town. The entire town of about 700 is a historic district, with well over 100 historic sites in the town. 6/X
The Trevino-Uribe Rancho is National Historic Landmark, the highest designation a site can have. It dates to 1830 and is almost perfectly preserved. It would be less than 100 yards away from the 30 foot high wall. Wall construction would likely damage the site. 7/X
This is a plaque on the historic US Customs House, right by the river. A ferry was operated in San Ygnacio as a border crossing for many years. The ferry was closed when Falcon Dam was built and a crossing was opened there. 8/X
The current border crossing goes right over Falcon Dam. The creation of the damn flooded the town of Guerrero in Mexico, although it reappears during droughts when the lake level drops. @gregmatic9000 got some great photos when we visited the remains of Guerero in the 1990s. 9/X
Finished the drive through South Texas with some relaxing and fishing on the lake! Hope y'all enjoyed the thread and please don't let them build more #BorderWall. Biden paused construction, but let's make sure #NotAnotherFoot ever gets built. 10/X
