#HappyBirthdayDeanWinchester (thread below)
I created this account because there's an inherent synchronicity in the crossover of these two shows that can be humorous, heartwarming and—in cases like today—allegorical. I want to focus on this last point & address a topic that underlies these two shows.
#Supernatural and #SchittsCreek both ignited different yet equally important conversations on LGBTQ portrayal and representation in media. Where Schitt's embraced queer stories & experiences, SPN often vilified & downplayed relationships that veered away from heteronormative.
A character's story is complex & those who write and play them own a part in telling it. But audiences also have a right to define a character around their own experiences. And though creators aren't required to confirm these interpretations, but they should never admonish them.
It's so important to address the harms of erasure in the media & acknowledge the validity of all queer stories, even when they manifest outside established canon. For those who found solace in Dean's character & believe he had a greater story to be told, you deserve to tell it.
So today, in honor of Dean, I'm donating to @glaad to push for more accurate & inclusive representation of all LGBTQ stories, especially the ones that are more complex or difficult to tell. If you are able, please consider donating as well. https://donate.glaad.org/site/Donation2;jsessionid=00000000.app20122b?1400.donation=form1&df_id=1400&mfc_pref=T&NONCE_TOKEN=1D8F5E828A7FA0153E406CADEEC4AF6F
