Self care is peddled by big business. They tell us that the way to happiness is by buying their products instead of challenging the things that pull down our mental health. Call me cynical but the drive by capitalists on mental health is to further their own aims 1/6
They can profit off selling bath bombs and candles, they can’t profit from fighting against poverty and alienation at work. 2/6
If anything this is detrimental to our mental health in the long run. Mark Fisher is good on this when he talks about hedonism. For the first time in history we have unlimited entertainment at our fingertips, to the point where we’re almost numb to it 3/6
Call me cynical but the recent drive on mental health by big business is a drive to increase our productivity. You can’t tell me that these people genuinely care about the working class when they’re the ones exploiting them 4/6
If they truly cared about mental health then they’d reduce the working week, outlaw unpaid overtime, and end the hostility to trade unionism. They’re not going to do that as that would harm profits 5/6
Instead we get massage cushions, colouring in, and self help books. Self care and talking about mental health alone isn’t going to fix us. Only radical, structural change can do that and the only people that can achieve that are us. 6/6
