My understanding on the split is that bi people like multiple genders while gender does not factor into attraction for pansexual people, which is a personal but not political difference IMO

Like bi and pan might help you, specifically, put the words to how you experience attraction, but bi and pan people functionally want the same things in the world: there are no “bi rights” fights that are not simultaneously pan rights as well

I ID as bi but not pan because even as I am attracted to men, women, and non-binary folks, gender presentation *does* affect my attraction to people: I’m not particularly drawn to masculinity, and the *way* I am attracted to men is different from the way I’m attracted to women

That’s not all bisexuals, but it is me, and it means that pansexual doesn’t ring true for me.

Also, I prefer the bi pride flag.

Also I’m so tired of the way the attractions of non-monosexuals are policed, my goodness. If it’s not “bisexuals are transphobes!!!!!” it’s shaming bisexuals whose romantic and sexual attractions don’t line up, or who — gasp! — are attracted differently to different genders.

It took me a while to understand the differences in my attractions to men and women because having any differences at all made me feel like a “bad bisexual;” I felt so much pressure to be attracted to everyone in the same way rather than have a queer self and a “straight” self.

But, like, my attraction to men is driven by their desire for me* while my attraction to women is driven by my desire for them, and those are two very different things!

* Which, yes, stems from growing up in a world that taught me my worth came from men’s interest in me

Anyway, it’s okay to act differently with partners of different genders or want different things from them, it doesn’t make you a “bad bisexual,” it just makes you you.
