I think what I find hard about the national discourse on how hard it is to be in lockdown is that back when I first became sick and housebound, I had to downplay how awful it was because people frankly did not want to hear it and called me “negative” 1/5
When lockdown happened I thought it might breed some empathy but when we (sick/disabled folk) tried to say “welcome to our world” people got pissy and said “well you struggled at first too!” Yeah, but... you didn’t allow us that struggle. You ignored or maligned us.. 2/5
... and threw your toxic positivity bullshit at us. And now you’re suddenly so worried about what being confined to the house does to a person’s mental health. But, like, where was this energy when it was happening to your sick and disabled pals? And we know full well.. 3/5
... that we’ll be left out of the conversation AGAIN when it’s over. Everyone is suddenly so concerned about mental health, but once again sick and disabled folk, for many of whom this lifestyle is the norm, are never invited to the chat or factored into any decisions. 4/5
And honestly, it stinks. This, on top of all the eugenics chat over the last year is just a lot to deal with. Your sick and disabled friends aren’t ok. We are mad. And we have a right to be.
