Since there’s been some confusion over psychosis, I’m starting a new #madtwitter thread:
What is/isn’t #psychosis?
Please share your experiences and RT so we can hear as many voices as possible.
This MUST be part of the #MentalHealthAwareness conversation. #madcovidchat

Someone suffering from psychosis is usually NOT:
- violent towards others
- likely to commit arson
- waving their arms around in the middle of the road
- about to murder someone
- likely to kill their family
- naked in public
- shouting in public

In my experience, psychosis IS:
- feeling paranoid, overwhelmed & confused
- VERY frightening
- very tiring
- one of the biggest and scariest things that can happen to someone in their entire life (the world as you know it disappears...)

Someone suffering from psychosis might:
- talk a lot/very little
- need reassurance & comfort
- isolate themselves
- not be able to trust close friends & family
- be convinced of theories/plans
- be very focused/have no attention span
- see/hear things that aren’t there

Statistically, someone suffering from psychosis is MORE likely to harm THEMSELVES than someone else.
THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT POINT (duh)

If you are in doubt as to what any of the following words mean:
psycho/psychotic/psychosis/schizo
....don’t use them. It really is that simple.
One person using a particular word increases the chances of someone else using that word, and so on. This can cause problems.

The most important thing to remember is that someone suffering from psychosis is probably NOT dangerous. It is ok for them to be out in public. BE NICE AND DO NOT JUDGE.
Nobody deserves the stigma/shame/harassment/taunting that we so often see with #mentalillness.
