I was browsing the net when I came across this RPC for sale. Recognised it immediately as the German 26 Reserve Div memorial and soldiers cemetery at Miraumont on the Somme. The monument was built as early as Dec 1914. More....
The rear is well annotated and bears a post stamp from neighbouring 28th Res Div Feldpost. Sent 1/12/16 by Landsturm Rekruit Reinhard Lapp 5/180. The 180 IR occupied the Thiepval Sector from early war and throughout the 1916 Somme battle. More...
Lapp was from Grunberg and born 24/8/1884. Sadly he was killed 14/9/1916 at 0900 hours having been hit in back and stomach by shell fragments. More....
Sadly the memorial and cemetery were destroyed and lost as the battle raged and there are no traces of it anymore. The soldiers graves lost forever. Info re Lapp provided by Ralph Whitehead author of the magnificent volumes “The Other Side If The Wire”. Thankyou. More....

As I stated the memorial, graves and surrounding buildings and church were destroyed by shell fire as the battle raged on and edged ever closer to Miraumont.
