My chickens journey started in January 2018 with 2000 layers chics. In May 2018 I added another 3000. When they all started laying, we would pick around 120-140 crates per day. In March 2018 I bought cheap Maize which we crushed and mixed with concentrates and fed the chickens.
That was the first mistake. The laying % dropped to below 40%. Lesson I learnt is that always feed chickens with Maize good enough for human consumption. If you can’t eat it, don’t give it to chickens. I had no option but to sale them all. This was devastating.
I was not happy as I had failed to recoup my initial investments since I had built very big foul runs and infrastructure at the plot. In between I had also invested in 2 greenhouses and I was doing tomatoes. The guy who made them did a magaba job as they were too short
This was mistake number 2. I had to remove the structures as this affected the output of the produce. The crops reached the greenhouse roof before the fruits at the bottom were ripe. I had to reconstruct them all over again.
I am glad to say now we have 6 greenhouses with different crops such as red and yellow pepper, tomatoes, baby marrow, onions, cucumbers, watermelons, all rotated in the greenhouses.
