A short thread about the history of Islam in my country of origin, South Africa 🇿🇦
As a white Afrikaner Muslim, most people are surprised when they find out I am Muslim, or that Islam even exists in South Africa. But in this thread I will try to show that our country has a rich Islamic history.
In the 17th century, the Dutch controlled the cape and much of Southeast Asia. Many Muslims from modern Indonesia were brought to South Africa as slaves in the early to mid 17th century. The first arrival of free Muslims called Mardyckers was in 1658.
Mardycka or Maredhika means freedom. In the 1800s, Muslims from the Indian subcontinent (ruled by Britain) began arriving in South Africa as laborers and other workers.
These Indian Muslims built some of the first mosques in South Africa during this time, such as the Jummah Mosque in Durban and Nurul Islam Mosque in Cape Town.
After apartheid, many Muslims from South Asia immigrated to South Africa. Black South Africans also began converting to Islam. Some White South Africans, like my family (Afrikaners), have converted too, like cricket star Wayne Parnell.
A fun fact is that Sultan Abdülmecid I sent an Ottoman scholar, Abu Bakr Effendi, to help teach Islam to people in South Africa. He also wrote Hanafi law books in Afrikaans, and Afrikaans became the first and only Germanic language to be written in Arabic script.
Some famous South African Muslim scholars:
