First off, people. Don’t be assholes. Protesting homes is an asshole move. Protesting the home of a public servant is even a bigger asshole move. Protesting the home of a public servant charged with mitigating a deadly pandemic is the biggest asshole move of all 🧵 https://twitter.com/premierscottmoe/status/1353190957793984512
Second, Dr Shahab isn’t the boss. He’s the main advisor. Scott Moe is the one calling the shots. It’s him and the cabinet. Take it up with him. But don’t be an asshole while doing it.

Politicians read their email. They hear the MLAs. They may not do what you want but they know
Third, we really should question the modern tendency of politicians & media treating experts as if they are the end-all-and-be-all of knowledge. As this pandemic shows, our experts know far less than they are made to appear. This is a dangerous combination.
In essence, when our politicians and media defer to expertise, they are using these experts as shields to deflect criticism or give their positions validity. “Dr says this, so we’re doing this.” It’s an easy way to dodge responsibility.
When we’re in a known situation, this usually isn’t a problem. In times of extreme uncertainty, when experts are shown time and again to have gotten things wrong, it’s a recipe for disaster.
Dr Shahab isn’t a politician. Neither is Dr Tam or Dr Fauci. They are not villains. Not are they heroes. They’re public servants working for elected representatives. They’re doing their best. They’ll make mistakes, and they’ll get stuff right too.
But the buck stops with the politicians. It’s them who should be bearing the brunt of all criticism. They should then be the face of the pandemic response.
By putting the chief health officer on stage, you’re begging an already angry and divided public to laud them or vilify them. There is no middle ground any more.
I humbly suggest to the media: stop lionizing public health officials. You’re setting them up to fail, as they can’t possibly meet everyone’s expectations. No one can.
I humbly suggest to politicians: take care when referring to experts. At the end of the day, the decisions you make are political in nature. Own up to it. (Scott Moe did well to demand complaints go directly to him. That’s where they belong).
I not-so-humbly suggest to the general public: be better. Stop demonizing your neighbours, elected officials, business owners, health workers, police, protesters, and everyone else who pisses you off.
We’re all angry. We get it. Use your anger constructively or, if you’re unable to do so, don’t be an asshole.
It all starts with love and compassion, folks. We’re all just trying to figure this shit out.

The only way we’re going to do it is through love and compassion.
