Before we get to realize it, half of all medical doctors in many developing countries will have switched from providing clinical care to public health research or preventive care.
I am worried because it is an issue.

Of course, their clinical backgrounds help a lot in public health research, especially to understand clinical patterns of diseases.
However, looking at how hard it can be to see research evidence become policies, I am sure a medical doctor would be more effective

in saving lives (the lives of our mothers and their babies) in health facilities than through research. I wonder if on average a medical doctor currently saves as many lives in research as those in clinical care, in developing countries.

Such a brain drain seems to have a high chance to happen within the first five years after graduation from medical schools. 7 to 8 years of investment in very talented students and once they become medical doctors, their insertion is difficult.

Some quickly lose their ambitions for clinical care and see working with international organizations as a better opportunity. Many of them are so overqualified for what they end up doing as work in preventive health or research.

They are often so clever that I believe that they would benefit more our health systems if they were given opportunities to receive training for specialties, to improve the technical capacities in our health systems. For example, we need heart surgeons...etc.

I could be wrong as my opinion is based on looking at observable and immediate impact that a medical doctor has providing clinical care vs doing research/preventive care. Nevertheless, we need to be aware of this potential issue and research it more.
