8 TYPES OF MARRIAGES AS PER SKANDA PURANA

In modern society we are aware of only two types of marriages, one is love marriage and the other is arranged marriage. But our scriptures mention eight types of marriages. Below is their description.

1)BRAHM VIVAH: Here the groom is called and given clothes and jewellery, then the bride is given to him.

2)DAIVA VIVAH : Here after the Ritwik performs a Yagya and a Kanya is offered to him as a Kanyadaan it is called Daiv vivah.

3)AARSHA VIVAH : If a cow and a bull is taken in exchange for a girl, it results in this type of Vivah.

4)PRAJAPATYA VIVAH : If a boy and girl are married with the aim of staying together and following the Dharma, it results in this type of marriage.

5)GANDHARVA VIVAH : If a boy and a girl like each other, they willingly accept this marriage, it is called Gandharva Vivah.

6)RAKSHAS VIVAH:If a girl is forcibly abducted and married then this degrading marriage is called Rakshas Vivah.This was not approved by Dharma & society.

7)PAISHACH VIVAH: In this type of marriage, the girl is tricked to marry. This marriage also was not approved by society and Dharma.

8)AASUR VIVAH: When a girl is purchased from her parents to be married, it results in this type of degrading marriage.

This too was counted as Adharma.

Wherever a girl is married in a degrading way, such marriages are looked down upon and is counted as Adharma. The child born out of such wedlock is also evil.
