Thinking about a girl from camp 15 years ago called Xiu whose name this other girl named Brittany refused to pronounce and gave her the nickname “sunny” and how Xiu, as revenge, decided to pretend she couldn’t pronounce Brittany and called her “Bing Bong” instead.
Then when Bing Bong lost its luster halfway through the summer she switched to “Bozo”.
As an adult, it is in bad taste to delight in the misery of children.

But as a child, it was definitely a highlight of our summer when she threw a tantrum in the tennis court scream-crying “I am not bing bong”
The gag is that Xiu wasn’t even her whole name, she had shortened it and simplified it for everyone, but somehow it wasn’t enough.

I remember everyone else pronouncing Xiu fine, which is why no one felt bad for Brittany when she made a joke out of refusing to.
Muting bc the notifications are out of control 😩

But yeah, I’ll never forget how distressed Brittany was about her identity being connected to Bing Bong, like it never occurred to her that Xiu would have felt the same way.
I don’t know. Xiu was actually a year older than me so I wasn’t close enough for her to tell me, we were just fellow campers.

But because I was younger & everyone looked up to the older campers, everyone in my camp group all just of watched the events unfold like “👀👀👀 yikes” https://twitter.com/witchbitchyo/status/1353391057468272641
