Religious animal liberation (放生) comes in many forms. I have witnessed the release of songbirds, snakes, crustaceans, into non-native habitats. Many released animals die from stress or habitat unsuitability, those that survive can prey on native wildlife and transmit diseases.
Religious animal releases, also known as "mercy release", fuels a global trade in the farming or wild harvests of these animals. https://api.nationalgeographic.com/distribution/public/amp/news/2017/01/wildlife-watch-mercy-release-buddhist-china-illegal-trade
My colleagues in Taiwan have been fighting a decade-long uphill battle to protect the island's unique wildlife from animals of mercy release that are harvested from throughout China and transported by rail, road and ship to be released and likely perish. https://www.asiasentinel.com/p/taiwans-prayer-animals-wreak-havoc
