Favorite Rappers From Each Year (a thread)

A thread to honor the best rapper that had the spotlight for me from each year. This would be one rapper/rap group per year from 1979 to 2020 since 2021 is not over yet.

RTs are appreciated now let's get it on.
1979 - Sugarhill Gang

Honorable Mention: Afrika Bambaata, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five

Beginning of a fresh start of Hip-Hop, Sugarhill Gang came off with a spectacular bang for the genre with their one take 14 minutes long cut of Rapper's Delight with a sample.
1980 - Kurtis Blow

Honorable Mention: Kool Moe Dee, Jimmy Spicer

One of the spectacular rappers to pave the way for others as a testament that yes you can surely make a career off rap! The Breaks become the first Gold Single for Hip-Hop.
1981 - Blowfly

Honorable Mention: Treacherous Three, Sha-Rock

An underrated pioneer for Rap that's rarely talked about but Blowfly is if not the first dirty rapper with lustful and adulterated lyrics especially with 1981's Porno Freak.
1982 - Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five

Honorable Mention: N/A

The whole crew set back up with a classic record as Melle Mel shifted Hip-Hop to the focus of realities of his hometown. The Message became the first conscious Rap track delivering the message.
1983 - Whodini

Honorable Mention: Run DMC, Rammellzee

MC Jalil and Ecstacy paved their own unique way on this record with their Disco Rap fused off with Synth heavy lead sounds that just shouts the 1980s gizmo atmosphere very well on this record.
1984 - Run DMC

Honorable Mention: LL Cool J, Whodini

With their bold looks and rough beats, Run DMC breaks down the Hip-Hop world as they blow up the fusion of Rock and Hip-Hop shifting the sound and evolute the noise for Hip-Hop while having the same attitude.
1985 - LL Cool J

Honorable Mention: Run DMC, Too Short

"LL Cool J is hard as HELL!" blasted from the boomboxes and radio as the critically acclaimed record goes throughout the scene. Radio would be one of the best energetic and fresh sounds of the 1980s HH.
1986 - KRS One

Honorable Mention: Beastie Boys, Steady B

1986 is pretty hard for me to pick my favourite but KRS One nailed his pave way from a homeless kid to make a district beef with MC Shan on Queens vs. Bronx with the track South Bronx.
1987 - Eric B. & Rakim

Honorable Mention: BDP, Hoodo Fushimi

Rakim and his producer combo of Eric B. would be one of the best chemistry for Hip-Hop history with Eric B's production and Rakim elevating the level of lyricism with his rhymes and penmanship on Paid in Full.
1988 - Slick Rick

Honorable Mention: N.W.A., Public Enemy

A master storyteller, a legend stapled for the golden era of Hip-Hop, Slick Rick was what I would say hard to outrap during that year, near to him would be Ice Cube and Big Daddy Kane.
1989 - Beastie Boys

Honorable Mention: De La Soul, The D.O.C., Queen Latifah

Beastie Boys are the first to break the barriers of race for Hip-Hop and on the year they would drop an album that would be too ahead of the time as they went on with a 27 minutes freestyle.

Titled as the most seminal Hip-Hop Band OAT by Elton John, A Tribe Called Quest did what they did as Q-Tip's smooth production flows on and they blast upon the positive yet conscious rap.
1992 - Kool G Rap

Honorable Mention: Dr. Dre, Redman, Divine Styler

One of the most hardcore releases ever. Kool G Rap manifest every single energy he has and pulls it out on this album with a BANG! I still honestly don't know why this never received 5 Mics since this is crazy.
1993 - De La Soul

Honorable Mention: Wu-Tang Clan, Snoop Dogg

"It might blow up, but it won't go pop." as the record said since Gangsta Rap is on the rise and the Soulful Jazz wanes yet De La Soul effortlessly makes one of the best records of the 90s with Buhloone Mindstate.
1994 - Tommy Wright III

Honorable Mention: Nas, B.I.G. Pharoahe Monch

Stacked with a lot of amazing rappers undoubtedly but I will go with TWIII for this year as we go to the Southern area and have him vividly rap fictitious horror stories setting up the atmosphere perfectly.
1995 - Scha Dara Parr

Honorable Mention: Three6Mafia, Big L, The Pharcyde

Now you might wonder who are these people? Hip-Hop proves that language does not matter since it travels universally until Japan as they would break out and even appear on De La Soul. Go check these guys!
1996 - 2pac

2000 - Del the Funky Homo Sapien

Honorable Mention: Outkast, Eminem

Hieroglyphic's lyrical master and Ice Cube's cousin, Del goes on with one of my favourite run of 2000s from the sci-fi conceptual Deltron to the crazy BSotB then on 2001 he would gain success with Gorillaz
2001 - Jay Z

Honorable Mention: Nas, Masta Ace, Aesop Rock

The Mafioso Don of the Rap game since the 90s he would reach higher highs and on his 6th album released on 9/11, it would reach the number 1 and made great disses alongside Nas. An entertaining year for the king.
2002 - N*E*R*D*

Honorable Mention: Scarface, Talib Kweli, Eminem

N*E*R*D* would put Hip-Hop in another approach Alternative take with its fresh genre bend with other sounds with unique productions from The Neptunes which would pave the way for Modern rappers such as Tyler.
2003 - Outkast

2006 - Viper

Honorable Mention: Lupe Fiasco, Clipse

No, seriously, Viper is unironically an amazing rapper especially in 2006. Self-produced and an innovator for Cloud Rap if you could say so. Try to listen to these and it would be proof why he is 2006's GOAT.
2007 - Kanye West

My favorite era of him being a web of himself as he funneled the Gangsta Rap to the end with an innovative electronic sound with Graduation until now still an inspirational record for me.
2008 - Lil Wayne

SGP an underrated and underappreciated legend of the Modern Rap Game and in 2014 he went stacked with productions and rap for Trap and Cloud Rap.

The MVP of 2020 with a consistent 4 album run from Manger on McNichols as my favourite project from him last year, he clears off any rapper on that year easily for me.
