Americans in the habit of making realistic plans & following through on them can have a hard time understanding their fellow citizens--we're talking tens of millions of people, now--who announce grandiose plans they never try to realize.
Follow-Through types take for granted norms that aren't shared by Grandiose Flakes.

FTs, for instance, try not to make threats they can't back up. They fear losing credibility.

Grandiose flakes constantly make idle threats for expressive purposes, or no purpose at all.
What determines your place on the Follow-Through-to-Grandiose axis, in my experience, is not solely a matter of temperament.

If you grow up in a privileged class where ppl are helped to realize large ambitions, you more easily learn how that happens, what it looks like..
One thing you learn in the ambition-realizing class is which ambitions are achievable, as a rule, and which are almost always fantasies.

You pay a social penalty, up here, for announcing grandiose plans and not delivering...
In a class where large ambitions are almost always fantasies, though, people tend to be more forgiving about grandiose intentions, speculative dreams of personal heroism, get-rich-quickness, idle quests.

If we insist on a society with such vast class divisions...
...we'll always have this gap. (Along w gaps in wealth & income, self-realization, health, stress- & happiness-levels etc)

The least we can do is learn to read statements of intention accurately, separating dead-serious instrumental ones from the grandiose & expressive.
