Story time! I fucked up. CW: Racism
When I first joined Feminist Twitter, I had an incredibly pretentious and cringe habit of referencing civilized society when I was talking about human rights issues. (1)

I got into an argument with a woman one night and said something about her view was shit and that it didn’t belong in civilized society. (2)
I had checked her profile for pronouns and such, and had saw a tweet where she referred to herself as a white woman, so I didn’t think anything of it. Turns out she was actually Native American. (3)
Her and her friends instantly went after me for being racist. I hadn’t meant anything racist by it, and she had said she was white on her profile. She was actually just white passing. I felt backed into a corner and like she was weaponizing her ethnicity to make me look bad. (4)
I asked my friends if I was wrong, and no one told me I was.
Looking back now, though... I was so obviously, glaringly, incredibly wrong. (5)

The intent of my words didn’t matter. It didn’t matter if I was saying it to everyone just as the way I was used to speaking at that time. The result is what mattered, and I made a Native American woman feel like I was calling her a savage. (6)
I wish I remembered her @ so I could apologize to her like she deserves.
White people: intent does not matter. Read that until it’s burned into your brain. Intent does not matter. Intent. Does. Not. Matter.
