What hits me the most about It’s A Sin is the way Russell has captured people’s disgust and lack of understanding or empathy to an epidemic that effected specifically queer people at the time.
The abhorrence and the general feeling “serves them right for being disgusting” is
something my queer elders told me about. To turn a blind eye to the pain and suffering of a community. The absolute loss. The anger. It was ignored and pushed aside because we weren’t considered equals. We were seen as less than.
This is one of the reasons so many in our
community have such frustration and resentment. Why we are so bright and want to stand out. To be seen. Because it’s been hard fought. And we will not go back.
I have nothing but absolute respect and gratitude for our communities who guided us through the most bleak of times.
Teach yourself about your tribes history. It’s the very least you can do.
