For those concerned about recent crime on the Hill, so am I. It’s important to consider that these events happened during a week when DC, which already has the highest # of police per capita of any major US city was also teeming with police from other jurx & nat’l guardsmen. 1/x
For me, this just reinforces that the problem that is leading to crime in this neighborhood isn’t a lack of police patrolling the streets, but rather a lack of opportunities, lack of jobs, lack of affordable housing. People are struggling and desperate. 2/x
As I eat dinner in my warm home, many in DC sleep on the streets & don’t know where their next meal is coming from. Not to justify crime, but in order to deal w/ it we must understand why it happens. The long game may not be popular w/ ppl looking for an immediate solution. 3/x
This isn’t a simple problem w/ a simple solution. Isn’t an approach that meaningfully puts a dent in future crime (boosting employment & treating root causes) better than more futile attempts to put all our eggs in the basket of the same old approach that hasn’t worked? 4/4
