One of the things #ItsASin handles so well, especially in its final episodes: it doesn't let parents off the hook. "Oh we didn't know"; "they were different times". No, fuck that. Even today we still have parents making their LGBTQI kids' stuff all about them...
...Parents, it's not about you. If you have kids now or are thinking about it, ask yourself, really ask yourself: are you willing to love that child unconditionally? Fully unconditionally? Do you know what unconditional means?
All any child - especially a child who comes to their parent for help, or even if they don't - all that child wants is for their parent to understand, for that parent not to make it about themselves, about whatever "dream" they have to now let go of...
...are you really willing to be that kind of parent? Are you willing for that to take primacy over your faith, your cultural beliefs, your politics? If not, don't become a parent. Keep your life just about yourself. You don't deserve that child.
I'm not a parent, so you might very well say, 'you couldn't possibly understand'. And that's your right. But parents of LGBTQI kids, on the whole, need to do better. Much better. Even the ones who think they're "cool".
Anyway. The final two episodes of #ItsASin are sublime. Keeley Hawkes does amazing work with a really challenging, difficult role. The cast in general are sublime. Just an all out masterpiece.
