Things I wish I knew before starting therapy

A thread 🧵 inspired by @TomSchmidt30
1) It’s ok to “shop around” for a therapist

Not all therapists will be a good fit for you, and it’s ok to move on if you aren’t feeling it
2) Therapy isn’t just for when you have a “problem”

Sure, life events, major transitions, traumas, losses, and mental illness all lead people to seek therapy; but some of my most productive sessions have been when I’m feeling well
3) It’s ok to be up front about your scheduling needs

Only available evenings? Weekends? Thursdays at 3pm? Better to be up front about your schedule before you go through the work of establishing care with someone
4) Not all therapy is the same!

There are different types of therapy and some modalities may be a better fit for your needs than others
