Here are some rules I try to live by:
1. Never dish out discipline without thinking about it for at least 24 hours. When I dish out discipline it is with as much context and coaching as possible.
2. When someone gives fair challange but I still disagree, I think about it for at least 24 hours (where possible) before making my mind up. It shows I actually considered their viewpoint even if you didn't deem it the best course of action in the end.
3. If I do have to dismiss a fair challange immediately, I give them as much context for my decision as possible. I might not HAVE to but sometimes it is better to. (See @B4ck1n's recent post on lockdown leadership)
4. I am there when they need me and not there when they don't need me. Balancing presence and mission command is nails and it takes effort! But like passive agressive teenagers they need space to do their job.
5. I push out information as fast and accurately as possible, it can make or break peoples' experiences at work. As a rule, my soldiers prefer 20% accuracy quickly with a caveat of change than 90% accuracy too late to be of any use.
6. NTTs get the same levels of support as if they were running to board that year. They will be walking talking adverts for the Army when they go.
7. Mistakes must be made. I don't have enough time in a day to explain the mistakes I have made in the last 15 years. Concentrate on the cataclysmic ones and the rest are part of the roller coasterof learning.
8. Don't ever apologise for wanting to be good at what you do. Do what gives you fulfilment and do it to the best of your ability.
