Okay so my friends who didn’t go to school in AKL always comment on why ppl who went to school here - particularly in central ask what school you went to still in our late 20s. BUT!!
Looking around now it is astonishing seeing the wealth gap and wealth accumulations around ppl who went to certain schools.
I think it’s important to recognise it because those school connections ripple into so much influence and closed deals.
At one of my old jobs, my boss went to Auckland Grammar and literally remarked to me on how the old boys club was coming into play. His peers at school have influence across media, govt, law and businesses which service govt.
But let’s be real, it’s not just an old boys club, it’s an old pākehā wealth club that you can get your kids into if you send them to certain schools.
Dismantling institutional inequality and racism is tied up in this.
