Do you assume a gender, when an inanimate object is anthropomorphicised?

Yes or no.
Would it be better or worse to add characters to the mix with even a *slight* hint of non-male gendering?

(And this doesn’t even begin to address non-binary issues...)
Obviously, this is for a game.

I’d rather leave it to folks’ imagination as to whether or not anthropomorphic pencils have genders...

Increasing the ferrule size. Not sure if this does any more or less, as far as the perceived gendering of *baseline* anthropomorphic objects goes...but at least the eraser now seems less like pants...
