It's the end of a long week and worth taking stock of the vaccination programme in Wales. We have seen huge increase in the rate of vaccination in recent days which is tremendous news. Here are a few reflections so far:
Mass vaccination at this scale and speed has never been attempted before in this country. It is a monumental task. There are 2 vaccines for now. Pfizer is the prima donna of vaccines, only lasting 5 days once defrosted and only a few hours once prepared for use.
Astra Zeneca is more sturdy but has been less reliable in its early supply. It will come through in larger quantities as we move throuvh February. Pfizer requires specially prepared venues to cope with its foibles but has been more plentiful in the early phases.
Health systems have to work our how to deliver both vaccines safely, then coordinate a second dose at a precise time for every one of the several million individuals needing to be vaccinated.
The supply chain is still less predictable than we would all like, so we have to have a system that can flex towards capacity for one or the other vaccine.
We have to go as fast as we can without creating too much geographical inequity or inequity between eligible groups. This is hard.
The only way to achieve this is to plan a range of options for vaccine delivery, harnessing all parts of the system. Mass vaccination centres, yes, but primary care comes into its own here...
Not just general practice but wider community care drawing on multiprofessional groups and networks working together to provide the right solution for that locality.
We will do this. We are doing this. It's very tough but we have to just keep ploughing on, looking at the data and constantly checking that nobody is left behind.
We can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel.
PS sorry about the typos. I is tired.
