We are entering a prolonged period of what I call “Two decades of fire” where our politics will be defined by increasing violence, intransigence and zero-sum extremism. It is all undergirded by demographic change - those that fear it and those that welcome it.
The next twenty years will witness the transformation of America from a white majority country to a non-white majority country.This is unprecedented in our 250 year history and will challenge the very notion of American identity.Can America be America if it isnt a white country?
American style democracy has worked for most whites since our inception. It has not worked for most non-whites. Recognizing that truth is foundational to building a political system that works for a new American century.
Representative democracy must be more representative than it has been for over two centuries. If it can not do that it will not survive. Our challenge is to push for America to be more true to its ideal than its previous reality.
This can not be achieved by fronting black and brown faces on our government, our corporations, our institutions or our political organizations any longer. That is not diversity. Diversity is ownership. It is not just sitting at the table you helped build - but owning it.
