Talking about “unity” but getting nothing done isn’t going to build the Democratic brand. The best way for Democrats to win over independents and moderate Republicans is to pass good legislation that helps people. To do this, we’re gonna need to kill the filibuster.
Obamacare is a very popular law. It was passed along completely partisan lines. It could’ve been even better, and passed a lot faster, had the Democrats not spent so much time courting obstructionist Republicans who were never going to vote yes. Democrats need to learn from this.
Republicans spent most of the last decade pretending to try to repeal Obamacare to please their rabid base. I said “pretending” because the GOP didn’t really want to repeal it. They knew it was a good law, it was helping their voters, and they didn’t have a better alternative.
If the Democratic vision of government as a mechanism to help people can actually work, now is the time to prove it. It may cost the Democrats control of Congress in 2022, but they may never get another chance. This is it. The time is now. Small window.
McConnell has zero interest in helping President Biden score wins, and he has even less interest in helping the American people. He is solely focused on winning back the senate in 2022. The sooner Biden realizes this, the better chance he has of having a consequential presidency.
If President Biden doesn’t ditch the “unity” mirage soon, the Democrats will lose both the House and Senate in 2022 and he will be a one-term president. And even worse, the Democratic brand may be damaged beyond repair, and America damaged even more.
I was 100% on board with President Biden trying to reach out to Republicans and work together. He tried it, but it didn’t work. It’s over now. Time to get to work without the traitors. The clock is ticking. Let’s roll.
