Picking up where @LynnSosnoskie left off and since Rolling Stones Magazine put out a list of top 20 songs about weed...and I was disappointed that it was the other type of weed. Here are my top 5 songs about weeds, as in mauvaises herbs...
# 1 has to be Return of the Giant hogweed, by Genesis. - I mean, come on, they even include the weed's scientific name in the lyrics https://genius.com/Genesis-the-return-of-the-giant-hogweed-lyrics
# 2 for me, is "Polk Salad Annie" (about polkweed/pokeweed)...the Elvis Presley version, which is a cover - if you can't be bothered watching the whole video, at least go to the 1 min 30 second mark to see one of the King's signature dance moves...
# 3 - Poison Ivy, by the Coasters - but also covered very well by the Rolling Stones
# 4 - Dandelion, by the Rolling Stones. - Who knew that the Rolling Stones quietly have a song catalogue containing more "weedy plant" ditties than most artists?
# 5 - Old pigweed, Mark Knopfler. I guess most people will prefer "Money for Nothing" or "Sultans of Swing"...but the lyrics “who put old pigweed in the Mulligan Stew” does have some historical context https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/eating-in-lean-times-55675182/
As an honourable mention though, Kudzu - by Phil Ruff, like Genesis's Return of the Giant Hogweed, does accurately capture Kudzu's story quite well
