A thread on why Connor Goldson could be a cheaper alternative to be explored by Liverpool:
Goldson is having one of his best seasons this year with Steven Gerrard’s Rangers. The club have kept 19 clean sheets this year with Goldson being at the heart of their defence.
Goldson is 6’3 and has a 71% aerial win rate this season (This season Virgil Van Dijk has a 68% win rate). He would bring an aerial prescence that recently Liverpool have been missing in defence and at set pieces.
Goldson averages around 1.2 tackles per game and on average is dribbled past 0.2 times per game. He has also won 68% of ground duels.
A deal for the centre half would probably not be too difficult to come by. Rangers are already 19 points clear and have the league all but wrapped up so the loss of the centre back would not harm them terribly.
Liverpool and Rangers also have a decent working relationship with past deals between the clubs including Ryan Kent and Sheyi Ojo. Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is also the current Rangers manager.
With a market value of only £5.5 million Goldson would not be too expensive. The club cluld chose a loan with an option/obligation to buy or just buy the defender out right.
Overall, Connor Goldson could be a cheaper alternative that Liverpool could explore in January instead of others like Militao and Botman.
