History is not a user manual for the future. But I note that we've usually had too little accountability, rarely too much. Who thinks there was *too much* de-Nazification, or *too many* finance prosecutions after 2008? Investigate Trump & crew—but in a nonpolitical silo at DOJ.
The consequences of failing to demand accountability—in the name of healing or to face a new threat—have consistently been terrible. Andrew Johnson said, "Treason must be made odious," but pardoned all Confederate leaders. Those leaders then overthrew Reconstruction with terror.
At the same time, it is important that investigations and prosecutions of the abuses, corruption, and crimes of the Trump administration be carefully isolated from political appointees. It can't look like, let alone be, a political vendetta. Get a career team together to do it.
