The idea that we create “art for art’s sake” never made sense to me. The purpose of a creative act as an end in itself limits our learning and fulfillment.
Doesn't matter if it's art or design.
Who wants to ignored? /1

Art creates questions. Design provides answers.
You may not agree.
An audience though is a way to gauge if you are meeting your objectives, whether that is getting attention, or solving a problem for someone with your design. /2

If an audience is a part of creation, why do so many people and organizations wait to bring an audience into the creation process?
My hunch is that an audience makes the creative process harder to complete or manage. There become too many ways to consider the feedback. /3

A better way to consider this problem is to view an audience as omnipresent in the creation process.
This frees us up from getting dragged down in the feedback process, but it creates another hurdle. Creation is sparked by the individual.
So how do we balance our attention? /4

Many artists have figured this out with Youtube. Slew is an example.
What's art and what's product? The audience is at the center of the creative process. He could isolate these worlds, but what would be the point? He's driving the creative process. /5 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyPUBwc9IQl2FZZa0_Tn32Q

Designers have also figured out how to move from solving problems for others to building audiences around other people's problems. Like @jackbutcher.
