1 Positives

We were *a lot* better than the BW game. BW was probably worst I've ever seen us so a low bar, but some improvements.

+ We defended our box much better. Daly, Kefalas & Richards-Everton were all solid. Defensive set-pieces far better.
2 Positives (cont.)

+ Deeper line suits us more, we were far less exposed in behind.

+ Flowers responded to problems and (mostly) fixed them. Switch to 4-4-2 at around 50 mins led to an even 30 mins or so.

+ Players ran more and were fitter. Pavey & JJ in particular
3 Positives (cont)

+ More organisation at offensive set-pieces. There's a much clearer pattern to free up players, just need a higher quality ball into the box.

+ Harry Taylor was, again, excellent. His work off the ball is so often missed.
4 Gameplan

Gameplan today was clear. Set-up to defend deeper and win balls in the box, look to loosen up by going to a 4-4-2 and get a result in the final 30.

Big emphasis on set pieces and forward players tracking back with full-backs.
5 Gameplan (cont.)

3/5/2 made us more solid in central areas, but issues in wide areas remained. JBW and McQueen couldn't get tight enough or were doubled up on. After 5 mins, clear that chances would come from these areas.
6 Gameplan (cont.)

Another issue was that our wider attackers were pulled back even deeper to help WBs (Pavey a classic example) and just couldn't cover ground to get forward and attack.

Aside from the breakaway, we created very little with 352 other than the odd set piece.
7 Gameplan (cont.)

We were fortunate to go in at 1-1. Alty were always going to start fast and we were soon overrun. Credit to Flowers for changing early on. 4-4-2 pushed us higher up the pitch and game was fairly even between 50-80 mins.
8 Gameplan (cont.)

Faal sub was an odd one. McQueen seemed no more leggy than the front 2. Pavey was finished by 80 mins after shuttling diagonals for the whole game. Faal for Pavey / JJ might have been better.
9 Gameplan (cont.)

Going into final 5 mins, clear that we were out on our feet. Needed to tighten up and take point. Odd that we didn't use full set of subs and bring Richards on to cover on either flank.

Predictably, break away goal came down the flank. Alty deserved win.
10 What still needs to change?

Can understand 3-5-2 against a good side like Alty, but it seriously limits the amount of chances we can create in open play.

Your full-backs are key in this system and JBW isn't fit enough to both attack & defend. McQueen also quite weak
11 Technical Issues

Technically, we're still very weak. Don't share optimism of some that squad are significantly underperforming. For 3/5/2 to work, we need new 2 wing backs and an attacking CM. EMC would prob work better as a deeper striker to give us a spare man in CM
12 Where do we go from here?

Lots of improvements, but would like to see Flowers try 4/4/2 from the start against Dover. We need to hold onto ball more and create more in open play.

Pavey & JBW put in a lot of effort today, but don't quite fit the system we're trying to play
13 Dover

For Dover, would try a 4/4/2 with Loach; Kefalas, Daly, R-E, Pascal; Petrasso, Dunne, Taylor, Richards; EMC, Faal.
14 Will we stay up?

We've gone for being truly awful to being almost mediocre. Our chances of staying up are below 50% but today was a step in the right direction.
