Writing these tweets after someone close shared with me what they are going through and I have my two cents to share because I have heard too many stories (online and through people I know), especially over the lockdown/pandemic. 1/n
Universities need to be more understanding when it comes to the problems international students face. In the name of diversity, they publicize the % of international students in their study programs but are they doing enough for these students or is it just for the numbers? 2/n
These students face way more trouble with accommodation in a new country. If a student does not have proper housing or has to move due to unforeseen circumstances, how are the universities responding? Are the admin/teachers willing to understand their problems? 3/n
Are they still imposing deadlines or are they understanding enough to give the student more time? Unfortunately, most times, students are either ignored, or their problems are downplayed. Also, the problems don't end at housing. There are *so* many problems students can face. 4/n
This combined stress results in poor grades, overworked students and generally unhappy students. Again, if all they want is to have international students just in the name of diversity yet this is how unwilling universities are to understand problems of international students 5/n
we need to think again what those numbers really mean. Also, I am not saying all teachers or every administration is this way. But, the stories I know of are of *real* people going through *real* problems. Change is much needed. 6/n
Also, I feel very nervous sharing a thread like this. Definitely out of my comfort zone. There could be a possibility something is misunderstood because I am not sharing details of the incidents that I know of. 7/n
