For the past few years, I’ve been trying to carve out disability as a beat. It’s been a hard sell. Most people see disability as something tragic that happens to a person, rather than as a community or an identity.
There are more stories like this one — Stories about disabled people getting away with nonsense because as soon as you say the word “disability” non-disabled people’s eyes glaze over with inspiration and/or pity.
Hire disabled journalists. Your outlet will be better for it.
