My initial interaction with Tom Buck, was receiving a direct message from him, about 4-5 yrs ago, encouraging me to run for SBC president, in order to advance the cause of racial healing & moving the ball forward in the inclusion & empowerment of minorities in SBC life. Prior...
to receiving that DM from Tom, I’d never heard met him, or heard of his name. I told him that I was not inclined to do so, but I would give it some contemplation & consideration. I then researched who is Tom Buck, & discovered we were radically different in many ways. Got back..
in touch with him, & expressed my surprise that he’d even consider encouraging me to run for SBC president given our major differences on major issues. He responded with, our differences were real. But, he was tired of the SBC just talking about moving the ball forward on race...
while making very little progress, & he was convinced, as president, I would move the ball forward. I was thankful & impressed with what I considered to be (& still do) his sincere desire for racial healing & advancement in the SBC, & his thought that I could help in that regard.
Nevertheless, I never got a “green light from God” so I graciously declined his encouragement to run for SBC president. However, my initial interactions with Tom Buck, formed the basis for a great friendship & fellowship. Since that time, Tom & I have openly & privately debated.
We’ve enjoyed every second of it, because our friendship was grounded in love & mutual respect. I knew & know the man’s heart. So, his twitter commentary didn’t rattle & shake me as it did others, because I knew Tom at a deeper level. Honestly, I’ve really enjoyed & been...
blessed by my friendship with Tom. We both like a good argument & trust me, we’ve had many. But, the relationship remained intact. Much of the glue in the friendship from my perspective was always grounded in, our initial contact...a White gentleman I’d never met, so radically...
different from me, encouraging me to do something to advance a righteous & Kingdom cause. However, I find his comment regarding Madam Vice President Kamala Harris extremely un-Christ like, unjustifiable & inconsistent with how he’s treated other female public figures. To refer...
to the Madam Vice President in any context as “Jezebel” is simply unwarranted & disrespectful & extremely harmful to the image of Southern Baptists, when this label emanates from the heart & mouth of an SBC pastor. Consequently, I choose not to engage in any further fellowship...
with Tom Buck. I will always value & appreciate our public & private affirmations of each other, the wonderful East Texas Bar-B-Que he’s treated me to, & many great conversations, & acts of friendship. He & I enjoyed a great Christmas fellowship over the phone not long ago. He...
claimed that I was the only one that sent a large bouquet of flowers to his father’s funeral celebration among SBC pastors. Tom posted a picture of the flowers on twitter. It pains me to have to address this. But, it needs to be known, that I love Tom Buck as a brother in Christ,
but deeply & vehemently disagree with & don’t appreciate such blatant disrespect & inconsistencies treatment that he’s shown the Vice President. I will probably not comment at all in the future on Tom’s twitter commentary. I simply thought it was important to go on record...
