sick of geto meta that leans too far in the “he is a victim” direction :/
he is an interesting and tragic figure to me, but tragic in the way that young people becoming extremist bigots is tragic. he’s less of a victim of the sorcerer society and more of a... hmm, consequence?
from the very beginning geto saw regular humans as inferior. something to be pitied and protected not because of their human rights but because of their inferior status.
(and yes gojo also has questionable morals and methods. however he is correct when he says the jujutsu sorcerer society is what needs to change. but this ain’t about him!!)
the vessel arc and his talk with tsukumo were both things that influenced geto and challenged his world views. but in the end, he himself came to the conclusion that non-sorcerers need to be wiped out.
he needs someone to blame for all this misery, and so he twists regular humans into the oppressors. in his mind, the world would be better without the inferior “monkeys”, as he calls them.
with only volume 0 to go on, geto comes across as almost cartoonishly racist. “ew, the monkey touched me *sprays self with deodorant*”. but with the added backstory showing us why he turned out the way he did, he becomes much more sinister,
especially in the way he recruits allies. “hey, this horrible unfair thing that happened to you? Those People did that. they are vermin. you are not like that. you are a special person, and you deserve to live in a world where you are treated like one.”
^ this is not a method that only fantasy extremists use. this is a real thing. his methods are realistic, eerily so.
geto frames his hatred as altruistic. he wants a better world, but not for everyone. for His People. never mind the fact that jujutsu sorcerers already discriminate among their own (something he himself takes part in, by the way)
even the horrific abuse against nanako and mimiko is used for his narrative that paints jujutsu sorcerers as the ones who are persecuted. but this ISN’T systematic oppression.
to me personally, the girls’ love and devotion to geto only makes him more of a villain. they are literally children raised to believe in his twisted ideals and ally with him, because he saved them and is nice to them...
... but that’s because they are not “monkeys”. he only cares about his own people. actions that can be perceived as good and loving do not cancel out that behind it all theres the idea of inferiority vs supremacy.
like, you are not just a little led astray when you are working towards genocide. several lines are already crossed when you’re at that point. like all of the lines.
anyway none of this means that i think liking geto as a character is bad. hell, toji shot a teen girl in the head but i still like him cuz his tits are fat.
i’m just PERSONALLY more into talking/thinking about this side of geto, so i guess i wanted to collect these thoughts in one place. i’m done now! thx for reading
