THREAD: Modern R&B albums to give you a taste of what the genre has to offer
Malibu- Anderson .Paak
My personal favourite on the list. Perfectly blends Hip Hop and R&B over silky smooth jazz and soul inspired production. Paak’s vocals are a blessing
Isolation- Kali Uchis
Kali comes with the sass of the trap R&B artists like Summer Walker but with much more entertaining vocal performances and some great lyrics. The album feels warm and energetic and is helped by some great fts
Lost & Found- Jorja Smith
Perfect to vibe to on late nights. Stripped back production and her silky smooth vocals make for a great laid back atmosphere.
Lianne La Havas (self Titled)
Probably the best vocalist on the list. Stripped back beats but you don’t need much more than her voice to enjoy the record. For any Radiohead fans out there, her rendition of Weird Fishes is beautiful
Ego Death- The Internet
Another favourite of mine. The funk and soul inspired beats make for a groovy atmosphere and it’s packed with great features alongside the brilliant musicians in the group. Some duds in the track list but some great highs make it worth it
Freudian- Daniel Caesar
Daniel’s voice makes this an entertaining listen front to back, his range never ceases to impress. Smooth R&B to get in your sad bag to and reflect. Almost angelic vocal mixing and production at points makes this feel like a really unique experience
Drunk- Thundercat
Thundercat is probably as experimental as mainstream R&B gets. Weird looped sound bites and snippets make up for a lot of the beats and the combination of Jazz, Funk and even some soft rock will keep you interested even if you don’t love his left field sound
The Electric Lady- Janelle Monáe
A brilliant and fun combination of R&B, dance, electronic and Pop music. Janelle really does bring a charisma and energy to the scene that so many lack in modern R&B and the early fts make for some real standout tracks.
99.9%- Kaytranada
Combines Dance and House music with R&B vocalists throughout to make for a very fun track list. The massive amount of great collaborators on this album will keep you engaged the whole way
Yes Lawd!- NxWorries
.Paak’s 2nd ft on this list but this time with the support of Knxledge on production. Paak’s vocals are a joy and the production makes it much more experimental and skittish than the rest of Paak’s body of work. Standout witty lyrics will have you laughing
Love and Compromise- Mahalia
A great blend of pop and R&B from one of the fastest growing artists out of the UK. Her song themes of love and heartbreak and recovery are pretty standard for R&B but the catchy production makes it feel more memorable than your average album.
Miguel doing what Miguel does best. Loads of entertaining R&B tracks fused with some pop and Hip Hop elements. The vibe can be a bit all over the place but there’s enough great songs on here to look past that
