I keep seeing people upset about this & the way folks expect the equivalent of a national forest fire to be put out immediately is fascinating. Could lockdowns help? Probably. Not as much as they would months ago. We are already in one of the worst case scenarios. https://twitter.com/disclosetv/status/1352712833511919623
Paying people enough to survive is still a great idea. We should do that & suspend evictions etc. But y'all as much as I would like to think a 4 week lockdown could help, none of the public health models had good news if gatherings weren't stopped before the holidays.
Even the attack on the Capitol was a superspreader event. Remember all the images in the hotel lobby afterward? Not a mask in sight. Thousands of people who weren't masked, didn't social distance, & who then went back to at least a dozen different states. Covid everywhere
States rights just make it worse, because even though the US is one country technically...we're really 50 different ones. And some like Texas & Florida & Tennessee etc never complied with public health guidelines. Even states that did like Illinois are between ones that didn't
TBH all we can do now is vaccines. And hope we get to herd immunity. But right now at least 180K people are infected & spreading it in their communities. That's assuming the positive tests are it. They're probably not.
A lockdown can't hurt. We should still do it. But the numbers for daily infections...plan to stay home for the next 6 months
Because it is going to take a daily rate of something like 2 million vaccines (which anti vaxxers are going to try to prevent) to see a real change. I don't know that we have that many doses. And that's before we get to the false info about the vaccines.
I saw people trying to tie Hank Aaron's death at 86 to him getting vaccinated. 86. America is lying to itself about far too much right now.
Biden ran on stopping it. He can stop it. We can stop it. But not overnight. More like 120 days. Maybe 180.
