Until I worked at Navy Times I did not fully appreciate the power of of example, both good and bad. It meant a lot to our readers/sailors who were black women when Michelle Howard made 4-Star. I got a lot of notes about that article saying it was an inspiration.
Likewise, if you are working at a command and you see your superior disgrace the uniform or the position, you start to question the organization in which that leader advanced. That's why the accountability piece of places like Navy Times is so important.
Sailors see everything you say and do. They're watching. They know when you are being a hypocrite and they know when you are leading by example. that's the one thing I can tell you from having been a junior sailor: I was watching your actions.
