We need to talk about “covid safe”, as seen in this tweet here (name redacted because it’s not relevant).
The idea that any indoor space can be “covid safe” is, frankly, a myth. Badly ventilated indoor spaces are highly dangerous, no matter how much hand sanitiser you have.

The virus spreads primarily through the air, not physical contact, and can spread well over 2m. Other governments, particularly East Asian ones, have recognised this and adjusted their advice accordingly.
For whatever reason, ours hasn’t.

Instead, we’ve got this “covid safe” idea that is based on...basically nothing.
Why this is a problem is twofold...
Why this is a problem is twofold...
Firstly, it reduces support for restrictions (as seen in the tweet I started this thread with). We saw that when they started shutting down pubs and restaurants.
“But we’re covid safe, we’re following all the guidance,” the industry said.

Except it isn’t possible to be safe when you’ve got large numbers of people inside, maskless, talking and breathing virus into the air - even if you make them wear a mask when they’re not sitting down or use sanitiser when they come in.
The second problem is that it makes people more willing to bend or break the rules.
“We can be covid safe,” they think, as long as they stay 2m apart and use hand sanitiser when they illegally visit their friends. This, of course, isn’t the case, but the idea it is has spread.

This, by the way, is also how a lot of businesses justify making their staff come to work now when they didn’t in the first lockdown, which is what’s really driving a lot of the current infections.
Given all this, I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to say that the idea that you can be “covid safe” indoors has killed people, and will continue to kill people.
So please, avoid gathering inside, even if you think you can do it in a “covid safe” way. Because you can’t.
