@RAI_ie, @Ryanair, @VFIpubs, @CIF_Ireland, @ibec_irl and other loud lobby voices through this pandemic who've been so vocal in pushing for support for their business's of interest. I ask you all to join in behind our healthcare and frontlines workers 1/8
(doctors, nurses, HCAs, social workers, public health specialists, contact tracers, gps etc) and help us figure out how to help them. This week their days have consisted of endless phonecalls to worried families to tell them their loved ones are dying in front of them and 2/8
despite all they're doing they can't save them.
Nurses, living at home with their parents have been confining themselves to their bedrooms for fear of infecting their loved ones.
What we have and continue to inflict on this cohort of our society is atrocious. 3/8
They have no choice but to show up for work, and we all know it and sympathise, but also think thank god it's not me in their shoes.
Playing a blame game won't help now but coming up with solutions for them should be on us all. 4/8
When the covid numbers go down, their trauma will hit, they're too exhausted for anything right now. They'll need time to heal and process. They don't have enough staff now so are unlikely to have enough to take proper rests/vacations then. Free meals and claps won't suffice. 5/8
I see a lot of chatter here re vaccinations and the assumption that restaurants will open, holidays will resume and business will go back to normal.
Can we stop for a minute and think about who we're trodding on in a rush to normal because for some the scars will never heal. 6/8
The burden of care is falling mostly on women but don't let that stop you from championing a solution for them. Don't forge ahead with plans that take no notice of the burnt out shell of a cohort that is our frontline workers that have been holding this country up. 7/8
There's a wealth of problem solving abilities amongst us all. Let's collectively apply them. Because any step out of this hell MUST include solutions for those we conveniently get to think "thank god it's not me".
