1/3 The heroics of the USA are intriguing from the vantage-point of a culture like Australia more given to an anti-heroics. You see it in American rhetoric, DC’s architecture and the narrative of “manifest destiny”...
2/3 It’s about success and winning. Failure isn’t an option...and if you do fail you’re that worst of all things, a loser. The heroics can degenerate into a culture of celebrity which is fake-heroics...
3/3 In such a culture it’s a challenge to situate the anti-heroics of the Cross (i.e. the Gospel) shunning all triumphalism in the Church and any taste for power and power struggles. How to be a humble Church becomes the question...and not just in the US.
