Single most useful advice I gave to my younger brother as he got into the university. This is as useful to junior devs as it is to anyone at all ready to grow in experience and skills.

Easiest way to become a mid-level dev ready to be hired for remote work:
Join a local company or startup & BUILD. You can take on personal/OS projects with a senior dev on the side if you’ve got the time. The pay might not be attractive atm but give it time.
Sha dey build abeg.

If you’re finding it difficult to land the job, you might need to become open to providing your skills to people with ideas. Help build ideas and use it as a practice - the ideas can be yours also. Just build.
There’s nothing attractive about a dev that haven’t built anything.

You need a senior dev as a mentor? Build something also.
It’s easier to get a mentor when you’ve shown the initiative and discipline to build something.
Here’s a simple draft of a first contact message to a potential mentor:

Hi ___,
I have seen and admired your work for a while now, especially __ and __ (mention something that shows you actually paid attention) and I have been trying to pick one or two things from you.
I applied __ in this project I just completed. Do you mind taking a look?

I’m assuming your choice of a mentor isn’t random also. It irks me when someone DMs me for me to be their mentor in React! when did you see me write React
? I work with and support devs a lot because I work in tech & I was once a dev (I know how difficult it was starting out).

To our senior and remote devs, we’ll have to also watch how we communicate. Sometimes it looks like everyone is earning $$ but it’s far from true. We might need to also direct junior devs to local companies because some people will have to build local products also.
To our local companies, try to compensate your devs fairly and scope out your dev projects with senior devs (as consultants if you can’t pay to have them on board), so that you understand the process of development and not overwhelm people you aren’t even paying very well...
... They need time to learn, so ensure you give them that time. Please and please, do your due diligence (super important) and scope your MVP properly (do this with a dev). Building a platform like Stripe in 3 months, doesn’t make you Stripe.
But this thread isn’t for you, ttyl.

To the junior devs, please try to understand the market you’re playing in. You can estimate the revenue of your company. Do you think it’s realistic to pay you what you’re asking for? If you think you’re above your pay, request for something reasonable and if they can’t pay...
...then you can leave. A company isn’t bad because they can’t afford to pay you. You might be a founder soon, na there your eye go clear, you’ll not even be able to hire your mentee.
Let’s all try to be reasonable with our expectations. Make our local companies no die finish.

The world is a global village now, so you can change markets (by working remotely with companies in other markets). You can’t also spend all your years of experience applying for jobs. Jobberman and Indeed don sabi you.
You can’t do HTML/CSS & start applying for senior roles.

HR folks and founders are finding it difficult to find good people because you get coconut head.
I think the framework for assignment based application process for devs (that @edemkumodzi mentioned in the CH conversation yesterday by @developerayo) is a really good idea.

To be honest, there’s a lot to do and community leaders have a role to play in helping out.
@jidesakin_ & @ConsonanceClub will release a platform soon to help people find their path based on responses to a few questions. We hope it helps.

Join a team and prove yourself useful. Provide value to the team, if you have the time, you can actually estimate your value to the team. This might help you put things into perspective (As an egoLang dev, I fit talk about am later).
Till then, keep showing up and being useful.
