If there’s any change in vaccine policy now it won’t be because @JayMitchinson and his team @yorkshirepost were wrong. It will be a change because they were spot on and exposed the truth. Although we have a particularly authoritarian crew in right now their behaviour is 1
par for the course. I recall whilst at The Gazette the consequences of the truth. A classic was when @ByNeilMac tried - without success - to contact Sir Stuart Bell 100 times. The legal pressure - very expensive lawyers- put on us was extraordinary not to publish. It was true. 2
We also dared to challenge the most powerful people in Teesside- Ray Mallon and Steve Gibson. Many thanks to @stevedyson ( Dodgy Docker and Bent Copper front page)and @DarrenThwaites for their fearless leadership and courage. 2
On a different level Vera Baird who tried to claim expenses for a Christmas tree. In all cases there was huge push back - those in power hate being held to account. It is so important that local media does though - be certain of your facts but don’t be bullied.
And also I was very proud of the stories we knew to be true but didn’t publish. Both ourselves and our friends @TheNorthernEcho knew much more than we published about SSI from their takeover to their demise. We didn’t publish in order to protect the best outcome for Teesside.
